Westwood One and The Recording Academy Extend Partnership For The Grammys

Westwood One, the largest radio network in the U.S., is the official radio broadcast partner of the Recording Academy and the Grammys taking place at Madison Square Garden on January 28, 2018.  As a celebration of the event and the Recording Academy's return to New York City, Westwood One will produce a diverse menu of exclusive multi-format programing and a live music performance series.

"Westwood One's partnership with the Recording Academy and the Grammy Awards spans across two decades, and I could not be more excited to welcome the Recording Academy and the Grammys 60th Anniversary Awards back to our hometown NYC,” said Suzanne Grimes, EVP Corporate Marketing, Cumulus Media and President, Westwood One.  “Our #1 goal is to engage and entertain our listeners across the country, so this year we created a month-long programming line-up that brings the Grammys to life – everything from a chance to win a trip to NYC to attend the Awards, three format specific Grammy Nomination specials, red carpet reports from the hottest and most exclusive events, and for the first time this year, 10 live musical performances during the week leading up to Music’s Biggest Night®.”

"The Recording Academy is pleased to extend its partnership with Westwood One as the official radio broadcast partner of the 60th Annual Grammy Awards," said Evan Greene, Chief Marketing Officer at the Recording Academy. "Westwood One's dedicated efforts will provide fans various opportunities to engage with the Grammys and play an important role in building excitement and anticipation for Music's Biggest Night."

The month-long celebration is dedicated to music fans and listeners across the country with a GRAMMY 60th Anniversary VIP sweepstakes, offering a trip to NYC and can’t-buy tickets to the 60th GRAMMY Awards®.  Westwood One also will create a two-hour GRAMMYs® 60th Anniversary Nomination Special and distribute the broadcast across three key music formats airing January 20 and 21st, each hosted by New York City on-air talent.  The Top 40/Rhythmic, Hot AC, and AC versions will be hosted by Jayde Donovan from Todd & Jayde Mornings on WPLJ-FM/New York and the Urban/Urban AC version will be hosted by La Loca from WNBM-FM/New York.

The 60th Grammy Awards® will take place at Madison Square Garden in New York on January 28, 2018, airing live on CBS from 7:30 – 11 pm ET/4:30 – 8 pm PT and will be hosted by The Late Late Show’s James Corden.

Keith Urban Announces New Album And Tour During Surprise Club Show

Capitol Nashville's Keith Urban announced a new album and upcoming tour for 2018 during a pop-up show at Nashville's Exit/In last night (1/17). Urban told a crowd of approximately 350 fans his upcoming set will be called "Graffiti U," although he did not reveal a release date yet. In a statement sent after the show, URBAN said of the new album project and tour, "I’ve been full-on writing, recording, collaborating, and creating with some incredibly talented people for 'Graffiti U,' a lot of whom I’ve never worked with before. I can hear how some of the songs will translate live already, which really makes putting on a new show so exhilarating, and I loved having our fans included in the announcement of the tour because it’s their tour, too."

Last night's surprise show was live streamed, with fans in cities across the country announcing "GRAFFITI WORLD TOUR 2018" on white poster boards, with specific cities and dates photo-shopped in. The 58-city tour kicks off Friday, June 15th in St. Louis. Black River Entertainment's Kelsea Ballerini will be Urban's special guest for most of the tour dates. Ballerini was on hand at Exit/In, too, first teaming with Urban for a cover of Camila Cabello's "Never Be The Same." Ballerini then played a short set, followed by Urban's return to the stage, where he played three new songs from "Graffiti U," followed by a lengthy set of familiar hits.

Grammy Awards To Bring Together Country Artists

The "60th Annual Grammy Awards will bring together 2018 Grammy nominees, Brothers Osborne and Maren Morris with past Grammy nominee Eric Church for a special segment paying tribute to victims of concert tragedies, including the Route 91 Harvest Festvial shooting in Las Vegas last October.  Brothers Osborne, Morris and Church were all performers during the Festival, which culminated with a mass shooting that left 58 people dead and over 500 injured.

"Live music events have always provided a safe space for fans to gather a shared celebration fo music,"said The Recording Academy Pres./CEO Neil Portnow. "Sadly, that wasn't always the case this past year. We believe it's incredibly important to pay tribute to those who lost their lives in these senseless tragedies and to remind musicians and music lovers alike that live music will continue to be a powerful force that unites us all."

The "60TH Annual Grammy Awards" are set for Sunday, January 28th at New York's Madison Square Garden and will be broadcast on CBS-TV.

Dierks Bentley Paves The Path To THE MOUNTAIN With Lead Single 'Woman, Amen'

The Soaring Track Is Available Now and Makes Its Television Debut Today (1/1/18) on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

Multi-PLATINUM singer/songwriter Dierks Bentley found himself instantly intrigued with the idea of “Woman, Amen” when it was thrown out during a Fall co-write with songwriters Josh Kear and Ross Copperman. The result is a deeply sincere and personal message of love and gratitude made universal and then freed to soar with signature acoustic instrumentation and a full-throated anthemic chorus. Available now at Country Radio and with all digital partners, Bentley will perform the lead track from his next studio album THE MOUNTAIN today on The Ellen DeGeneres Show (1/18, check local listings).

"My wife and our relationship has been the one constant element in my life over all the ups and downs of my career and personal life,” shared Bentley. "Our journey together has made me the man I am today. I doubt my heart would even recognize the old me. This song addresses that in the most direct possible way. The personal gratitude expressed in the lyrics, mixed with a track that leans heavily on some bigger sounds, is the perfect way to introduce the album.”

Since moving to Nashville, Bentley has brought a distinguishable grit and songwriting prowess to his recordings, and he’s consistently recreated his sound with a fearlessness that has won him both critical acclaim and commercial viability. Billboard gives breadth to his latest evolution with a video glimpse into the epic landscapes of Colorado and the studio atop a Telluride mesa where the song was recorded.

THE MOUNTAIN on Capitol Records Nashville, which will be released in early 2018.

Bridge Ratings Analyzes 'Digital Media Consumption Fatigue'

In the latest post on its Navigate The Future blog, Bridge Ratings Media Research Pres. Dave Van Dyke describes the "Digital Media Consumption Fatigue" that currently infects consumers. "Studies show that more options actually make us less satisfied," he wrote. "Researchers have found those who compare and deliberate on their choices more frequently experienced much higher levels of unhappiness -- even depression.
"According to a new Bridge Ratings consumer study, digital media burnout has reached a tipping point," he continued. "Trends suggest massive time-spent increases with digital media platforms over the last few years have created decision-stress among most Americans.
"As typical Americans expand their use of digital media to the point of saturation: 12 hours each day, usage of some platforms will diminish. We're finding that generally only three of the most-consumed digital platforms for most individuals will manage to sustain current usage levels and by the end of 2018 we will see declines in time-spent with those that don't make the cut.
"What does this mean for media companies?"

Find out here.

Kenny Chesney Signs With Warner

Blue Chair/Columbia's Kenny Chesney is leaving his label home for more than 20 years to sign with Warner Music Nashville.  Chesney started his career on Atlanta-based Capricorn, joining the BNA roster to release 1995's All I Need To Know. No word on plans for a successor to Cosmic Hallelujah, his 2016 album and last for the Sony label group.  Look for official word soon.

"It is a big deal to change labels," said Chesney. "But when you hear (Warner Misc Gorup CEO, Recorded Music) Max Lousada (WMN Chairman John Esposito), Espo and (WMN SVP A&R) Cris Lacy talk about music, about what it means and does, when you hear that passion, you can’t help but get fired up. To me, music is only complete when it gets to the fans and becomes part of their lives. The people at WARNER understand my commitment to that idea, and they’re just as committed to those ideals as I am.”

Esposito added, “Kenny Chesney embodies the relentless pursuit of artistic freedom and expression. An unapologetic free spirit, he has built a career on perseverance, drive, innovation, and most especially, great songs. Everything he does is inspired. It is with deep respect and honor that we welcome to Warner Music Nashville. We couldn’t be more excited to work with him and his team.”

False Emergency Alert System and Wirless emergency Alert Activation In Hawaii

The details of how a false Emergency Alert System and Wireless Emergency Alert activation warned Hawaiians that they were under a missle attack on Saturday (1/13) remain unclear, but FCC chairman Ajit Pai is weighing in with a statement blaming state officials for the incident.

Pai wrote," The false emergency alert sent yesterday in Hawaii was absolutely unacceptable.  It caused a wave of panic across the state -- worsened by the 38-minute delay before a correction alert was issued.  Moreover, false alerts undermine public confidence in the alerting system and thus reduce their effectiveness during real emergencies.

“The FCC’s investigation into this incident is well underway.  We have been in close contact with federal and state officials, gathering the facts about how this false alert was issued.  Based on the information we have collected so far, it appears that the government of Hawaii did not have reasonable safeguards or process controls in place to prevent the transmission of a false alert.

“Moving forward, we will focus on what steps need to be taken to prevent a similar incident from happening again.  Federal, state, and local officials throughout the country need to work together to identify any vulnerabilities to false alerts and do what’s necessary to fix them.  We also must ensure that corrections are issued immediately in the event that a false alert does go out.”

Here’s What Facebook's News Feed Overhaul Means To You

Cumulus Media and Westwood One VP/Social Media and Merge author Lori Lewis reports: On Thursday, Facebook announced another "fix" to News Feed; this time with a promise to prioritize and show more posts from friends and family and less from Pages/public content. This, of course, left publishers and Wall Street panicking.
If this change feels familiar, Facebook did nearly the same thing only 18 months ago. What Facebook said back in 2016 is essentially the same thing they are saying now: News Feed would reward posts creating more meaningful interactions.

The difference between 2016 and today is basic clarity. According to Adam Mosseri, Head of Facebook News Feed, what now matters to Facebook are comments. Conversations, they find, create a more meaningful experience.
Mosseri noted, “We already see great examples of this on Facebook — articles from publishers that can help start conversations between people on important issues, video series that can create tight-knit communities, and live videos that can generate more interactions and comments between people than other video.”

Facebook is moving away from “time spent” on the platform as a key performance metric, focusing more on quality time -- how “engaged” people are with posts.

* With this update, Facebook will “prioritize posts that spark conversations and meaningful interactions between people.”

* Pages will still appear, “Page posts that generate conversation between people will show higher in News Feed.”

* Creating dialogue is the "new" end game, “[Pages] whose posts prompt conversations between friends (not between person and Page) will see less of an effect. For example, live videos often lead to
discussion among viewers on Facebook -– in fact, live videos on average get six times as many interactions as regular videos.”

* Don’t become a baiter “[To goad] people into commenting on posts is not meaningful interaction, and Facebook will continue to demote those posts in News Feed.”

Mark Zuckerberg said it will take months for the changes to News Feed to roll out. That gives everyone ample time to test, test, test, study and learn what the audience cares about; and how you can make their Facebook experience more meaningful with our brands.

SiriusXM CEO James Meyer Gets $2 Million To Stay Through 2018

SiriusXM filed an 8-K form with The Securities And Exchange Commission yesterday (1/10), pointing out a new deal for CEO James Meyer. What was unusual was the length of the contract, running less than one year,  with an end date of December 31, 2018.

SiriusXM wrote,
"The Employment Agreement provides for an annual base salary of $2,000,000 and an opportunity to earn an annual bonus in an amount determined by the Compensation Committee of our Board of Directors based on the achievement of performance goals. The Employment Agreement does not provide for a specified annual bonus target opportunity. The Employment Agreement also provides, in the case of certain qualifying terminations, for a pro-rated bonus payment for the year of termination based on actual performance, and a lump sum cash severance payment equal to the remaining amount of Mr. Meyer’s base salary through the scheduled expiration of the Employment Agreement on December 31, 2018. Our obligation to pay the pro-rated bonus and severance is subject to Mr. Meyer’s execution of a release of claims against us and his compliance with certain restrictive covenants."

The deal also offers Meyer a three-year consulting agreement, "upon his termination of employment due to the expiration of the Employment Agreement or in the case of certain qualifying terminations."

On top of salary, Meyer is granted
, "restricted stock units with a grant date value of $7,500,000 (based on the closing price of our common stock on The NASDAQ Global Select Market on the date of grant). Krystal Keith & Lance Carpenter Duet To Get Radio Release

Early Praise For "Anyone Else" Prompts Label Push; Video Debut Slated
Acclaimed Show Dog Nashville recording artist Krystal Keith and smash songwriter/label mate Lance Carpenter thought they'd captured some magic when they recorded the duet "Anyone Else." After multiple media outlets raved and fans lit up social media in response to the track's release, Show Dog agreed and will release the song to country radio in the coming weeks.

Lauded as "addictive" and "incredibly catchy" (Rare Country) and deemed "a well-crafted and beautifully sung country love song" (The Oklahoman), "Anyone Else" is about to be the subject of a full radio campaign. Keith and Carpenter will begin visiting radio later this month, rolling straight through to Country Radio Seminar in early February. Before then, they'll also make time for giving back to the kids at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital during the Country Cares gathering this weekend.

Carpenter, recently hailed as one of Huffpo's Top 10 New Country Artists, found the song and brought it to Keith, whose Show Dog debut was praised for its stylistic and vocal breadth. "I had been writing with Krystal and asked her if she'd put a vocal on it so I could see what it sounded like as a duet. Her folks flipped out over it. I loved it."
"Our jaws hit the floor," Keith says of listening back to the recording. "We knew we had something special." Written by Kelly Archer, Greg Bates and Emily Shackleton, "Anyone Else" will have its video debut on CMT on January 23.

After a hiatus in which she welcomed her first child, Krystal Keith is currently wrapping production on an EP set for release in 2018 that reveals an expanded creative circle and sharper focus as a singer and songwriter. Lance Carpenter, who co-wrote Kelsea Ballerini's No. 1 "Love Me Like You Mean It," signed a recording contract with Show Dog Nashville late last year and will have his debut project out in 2018.
