Peyton and Chris Perform "Tennessee Whiskey"

An unlikely pairing, but the former Denver Broncos quarterback (with ties to Tennessee and a love of Country music) Peyton Manning took the stage with Chris Stapleton last Tuesday night at Red Rocks Amphitheater.  The two sang "Tennessee Whiskey" together and the crowd was thrilled.

Peyton is not up to Chris Stapleton's vocal abilities, but everyone thoroughly enjoyed the performance.

Cumulus Media Moving to Quarterly Incentive Plan For Execs

While annual bonuses are the norm, cumulus Media made public in an 8-K filing iwth the SEC that they would be moving to quarterly incentive plan for key execs.

Cumulus wrote, "On May 18, 2017, the Board of Directors of Cumlus Media Ind. upon the recommendation of the Compensation Committee of the Board and the Committee’s independent compensation consultant, approved the terms and conditions of the Company’s annual executive incentive plan for certain officers of the Company, including the Company’s current named executive officers, to operate as a quarterly incentive plan for 2017, and adopted a supplemental incentive plan for 2017 for key members of senior management, including the named executive officers."

Those quarterly awards, "to named executive officers under the 2017 QIP will be based on the Company achieving budgeted adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (“EBITDA”) levels. The target cash incentive award opportunity available to each named executive officer under the 2017 QIP is calculated as a percentage of each named executive officer’s base salary, all in accordance with the terms of each such officer’s existing employment agreement."

So how much will they be getting? The filing says, performance is measured at the end of each quarter, beginning with the quarter ended March 31, 2017, based on year-to-date performance at the end of the respective quarter. If target performance levels for the year-to-date period have been met or exceeded, 25% of the total annual target bonus will be awarded following applicable quarter end. If, at the completion of any quarter, target performance levels for the year-to-date period (other than the full year period) have not been met, no payment will be made for that period."

Under the 2017 SIP, target award opportunities for each neames executive officer are as follows:

CEO MARY BERNER ($1,470,000),
CFO JOHN  ABBOT ($587,500),
WESTWOOD ONE Pres. & EVP/Corporate Marketing SUZANNE Grimes ($120,000)

Cumulus Stock Grows

Cumulus Media stock has been growing the past couple of days.  Trading as CMLS on NASDAQ, the stock closed up 27% on Friday (5/19) to 49 cents.  On Monday CMLS was up 23.26% closing at 61 cents.

No one's sure for the uptick but there is plenty of speculation about former Cumulus Media President/CEO Lew Dickey's Modern Media Acquisition Corp.  As was reported here last week, the company is described as "a blank check company formed for the purpose of effecting a merger, share exchange, asset acquisition, stock purchase, reorganization, recapitalization or other similar business combination with a target company." The Company says it, "intends to seek a target company with an enterprise value of approximately $500 million to $1.5 billion. The proceeds of the offering will be used to fund such business combination."

Then we reported the Dickey had filed an 8-K with the SEC saying that Modern Media has 18 months to spend $209 million raised in a IPO.

Gerry House Is Back

Country Music Hall of Famer and longtime iHeartMedia Country WSIX/Nashville morning personality Gerry House is coming back on the air this Friday, May 27 at 7 a.m. (CT).  He will crack the mic on sister WNRQ-HD2-W252CM, The Big Legend at 98.3.  His longtime sidekick Mike Bohan will join him.

iHeartMedia made the news official through a news release and clarified House's role on The Big Legend.  “No, Gerry is not coming back to do a full show, but Gerry back on the radio, in any form, is can’t-miss radio,” said iHeartMedia/Nashville SVPP Gator Harrison.

“In addition to classic House Foundation moments in morning drive, Gerry will be The Big Legend's voice. Think of it as on-air Twitter. He thinks it, he says it, and we all laugh. The Big Legend is all about reliving the moments and the music, but it just wouldn’t be complete without Gerry House."

House was on WSIX Hosting "Gerry House and the House Foundation" from 1983-2010.  He's won numerous awards including the CMA, ACM Billboard and Marconi awards for Personality of the Year.

"The truth is, the good times, the spirit, and the hits we played back when the House Foundation morning show was on the air will be on The Big Legend,” said . “While this won’t be a full time show, all the laughs we had will be heard once again. Fun never gets old, and as always, I blame Mike Bohan.”

Trisha Brings The Preds Another Win

Trisha Yearwood sang the National Anthem at the Bridgestone Arena last night (5/22)  during the Nashville Predators' bid in the NHL Stanley Cup Playoff Series. Yearwood took to the ice before the puck dropped in Game Six as the Predators played the Anaheim Ducks.

The announcement that she would sing was made Yearwood's husband and tour mate on his Facebook Live "Inside Studio G" program.

Yearwood again brought the Predators good luck as they won the game, making the hockey tema seven-for-seven when a Country artist has performed the Anthem prior to the Playoff matchup.  The Preds will now head to the Stanley Cup finals for the first time in the history of the franchise. Research Indicates 9 a.m. Best Time for Workday Contests

NuVoodoo Media Services, a data-driven media marketing programming and content intelligence provider, announces that its recent NoVoodoo Ratings Prospect Study of nearly 5,700 respondents across all PPM markets revealed that, among likely PPM participants, nearly 60% listen to radio at work-far more than the number of those who predict they wouldn't participate in PPM.  In addition, NuVoodoo's study identified 9 a.m. as the best overall time for workday contests.

Though residential landline penetration continues to decline, NuVoodoo’s findings point to an opportunity for radio stations to reach likely PPM participants at work for information and data capture through telemarketing to business landlines. Even among likely PPM respondents, over half listen at work on a personal device, but likely PPM respondents over-index for controlling a shared listening device at work.

Mike O’Connor, Executive Vice President, Marketing, NuVoodoo Media Services said: “There is a surprising receptivity among likely PPM participants to at-work conversations with radio stations. This enables quick gathering of information and significantly fewer calls to obtain critical data and insights than through at-home telemarketing.”

Leigh Jacobs, Executive Vice President, Research Analysis, NuVoodoo Media Services observes: “9 AM remains the emotional starting point for the workday. Getting a jump on a competitor may be a reason to play for the slightly lower numbers between 8 AM and 9 AM. We also see that some demos would prefer to play during the lunch hour.”

Country Climbing in April PPM Monthlies

Country continued with another ratings climb during 2017 in the just-released April PP monthlies.  This might indicate a surge during the summer months.  Nielsen audio published its analysis of April PPMs today (5/22) and pointed to the specific group among Millennials.

"Since January (7.9%), Country's Millennial share has jumped by more than a share-point, coming in at 8.6% this month (April).”

Among 18-34s, Country is still down compared to April of 2016-but only by a tenth (8.7-8.6). the format grew its 18-34 share from march to April, however, improving 8.4-8.6.

Nielsen shared tracking of overall Millennial radio listening dating back to 2012, which showed Country ranked #2 behind Top 40 that year, with 8.2%.  Country, AC, News/Talk, and Classic Hits have all challenged Top 40 share with Millennials during the past five year.  Top 40 dipped from 12.2 in 2012 to 11.7% in April 2017.

April numbers also show Country up year-to-year (7.4-7.6) and flat from March '17 (7.6-7.6) with persons 6-plus, while overall 25-54 shares improved from March 2017 (7.2-7.3) and remained flat compared to April 2016.
