Carson Blackley Headed To WNCB/Raleigh for MD/Middays

Carson Blackley
iHeartMedia Country WPGB (BIG 104.7)/Pittsburgh MD/midday personality Carson Blackley is headed to Country sister WNCB/Raleigh for similar duties. The MD role is newly-created, with WNCB PD Carletta Blake shifting  to afternoons from Andie Cooper, who was doing the shift Point-To-Point from iHeart's Greensboro facility. Blake says, “Cooper will stay on for weekends. Basically, girls rule the world in Raleigh now."

Blackley's
move is a return to Raleigh and the iHearMedia cluster there; previously, she handled afternoons at Top 40 WDCG. She arrived in Pittsburgh for middays in 2014, and was promoted to MD in 2015.

No word yet on who will take on MD stripes at WPGB, but PD JD Greene says that Blackley will continue in middays there, tracking from Raleigh.
Blackley posted on her Facebook page today,"The last three-plus years have been my most memorable ...I didn't know where Pittsburgh was on the map before I moved ... I didn't know I'd meet my future husband here, and I definitely didn't know I'd love this city as much as I do."

Former RAB CEO Gary Fries Dies

The message about the death of former RAB CEO Gary Fries was passed along this morning by his son Todd.

"I want to thank everyone for their support and prayers," he wrote. "This morning at 12:13 a.m. Arizona time my father peacefully passed away. In leaving this world for a better place, he did it in typical Gary fashion. His determination and heart astounded the entire hospice staff.

"In their process they would most likely have notified the family on Saturday that it would be soon, but in typical Gary mentality he proved them all wrong, going until Friday. For this particular group of people, I thought it would might put a small smile on your face to know that he left on his terms."

AllAboutCountry.com will have more on this story throughout the day, as well as comments from the many people who knew Gary Fries throughout the industry.

Cumulus Media And Improving Culture Strategy's Success

Mary Berner (left) became CEO of Cumulus Media two years ago. The company was struggling. Money was tight. Morale was low. Here's how Berner and her leadership turned things around.

As she recalls, Berner took the reins of a company with four straight years of decline in listenership and revenue, three straight of EBITDA falloffs, as well as underperforming acquisitions creating heavy debt. Employee dissatisfaction was high; terms like "dysfunctional" and "toxic" were frequently heard.

Cumulus had almost 6,000 employees at stations in 90 markets. Among the rank-and-file, raises were unheard of, working conditions poor to untenable. Top management, by contrast, was living high on the hog, with large and visible perks.

Berner turned to a tried-and-true playbook featuring six key strategies.

1. Redefine the culture. Start by looking in the mirror, assess the problems, admit the mistakes, re-tool. The words Cumulus chose made for a nice acronym: FORCE (FOcused, Responsible, Collaborative and Empowered), and the framework for change.

2. Plan. Put your goals in writing, with key points spelled out and backed with realistic improved performance goals. Measure the progress within the plan regularly, fairly and weekly.

3.  Communicate clearly. Make sure everybody's on the same page. Where are we, where are we going, why it matters, what's my/your role, what's in it for me/you. Leadership must be accountable and available. Show up. Visit those far-flung forgotten markets. Take notes of everything said in those meetings. Summarize and pass it on to the leadership team. Let people know they are heard.

4. Push the new agenda. Take action on the changes you've chosen to make. Actions change the culture exponentially. Cumulus made a merit increase in wages (and in a very nice touch, sold the corporate plane to finance the hike). Show leadership by acknowledging the employees' contributions and loyalty: thank them personally. Set a deadline for corporate response to station issues and questions: then enforce it -- on yourselves.

5. Walk the walk. Any leader who fails to lead by example and follow the new culture, is out. Performance isn't enough to save you, progress as a teammate must be demonstated as well or the message is meaningless and fails. Give employees the opportunity to rate and grade management -- then listen to and act on their critiques.

6. Refresh it.  Cultural change is organic. Without food and water, it withers. Stick to the changes. Acknowledge the efforts of others. Respect seniority and loyalty that is healthy and engaged. Respect new ideas and input. Don't stand pat.

Berner has seen good progress in just two years. Turnover is down to 24%. Ninety-two percent of employees say they are proud to be at Cumulus and 91% believe the corporation is improving.

Over the two years, ratings and revenue have stabilized, then grown. Revenue and EBITDA are both up again.

Berner admits there are still big issues to be met and conquered, but also sees an engaged and energized culture which has people offering their very best. And this, Berner believes has turned Cumulus into the FORCE she envisioned.

Dierks Bentley And Bon Iver’s S. Carey Team Up For “Hold The Light” From Upcoming Film ONLY THE BRAVE SONG Available Now

The CMA Male Vocalist of the Year Nominee Writes and Records Song for Film and it’s based on Home State of Arizona’s Granite Mountain Hotshots. Columbia Pictures and Black Label Media’s ONLY THE BRAVE in Theaters Nationwide October 20.

The distinctive vocals of multiplatinum singer/songwriter and Arizona native Dierks Bentley resonate throughout “Hold The Light,” his first-ever song written and recorded for a motion picture. Also featuring Bon Iver’s S. Carey, “Hold the Light” is featured in Columbia Pictures and Black Label Media’s Only The Brave, in theaters nationwide October 20. The song was written by Bentley, Carey, Joe Trapanese and Jon Randall.

Bentley
first acted in 2013 when he organized and hosted the Country Cares Concert in Arizona, which raised more than half a million dollars for the families of the Granite Mountain Hotshots. The new song honors and embodies the spirit of the true heroism depicted in the film and is available now at all digital retailers and streaming partners.

In composing the song, Bentley and Carey worked closely with ONLY THE BRAVE composer Joe Trapanese.  In the collaboration, the songwriters worked Trapanese’s film theme into the music of the song, providing a seamless transition between song and score and resulting in a song that is integral to the film itself.

“This is at the top, if not the most meaningful experience I’ve ever been a part of,” said Bentley. “It hits me harder than any other song I’ve had a chance to be a part of. Over the last couple years, I’ve met and gotten to know Brendan, the sole survivor, and my mom has met with some of the guys’ families, and it’s still unfathomable to put yourself in any of their shoes. But, our goal was to create a message of hope and love. I’m honored to have been a part of it.”

Joseph Kosinski, the director of the film, added, “This story resonated deeply with Dierks from the beginning – he was one of the first to raise money to support the families of the Granite Mountain Hotshots and his commitment has been unwavering since then. The theme comes from the score and the lyrics come from the heart, so it was a natural fit for the film.

S. Carey said, "Working on this song with Joe, Dierks, and the whole crew was a true honor. My brother-in-law has been a wildlands fire fighter for the last several years so I had a somewhat personal starting point for the creative process. I'm extremely thankful to be able to honor these men, these true heroes, in the form of a song in a beautiful, powerful film."

For a first listen of the track exclusively on USA Today and to hear more about what it meant to Bentley, Carey and survivor Brendan McDonough to honor the sacrifice of the Granite Mountain Hotshots, visit: https://usat.ly/2fedbvs

To learn more about ONLY THE BRAVE, see a testimonial video in which Bentley, Carey and survivor Brendan McDonough describe honoring the sacrifice of the Granite Mountain Hotshots, and find out how you can support the wildland firefighter communities through The Granite Mountain Fund, go to OnlyTheBrave-Movie.com.

His hit songs this years have been "Somewhere On A Beach" and “Different For Girls.” His 2017 WHAT THE HELL WORLD TOUR,  claimed the top spot on Billboard's Hot Tours selling over 750 million tickets.

RIAA: Subscriptions, Streaming Fuel 17% H1 2017 Music Revenue Growth

The Golden $tream$!
The music industry continued its revenue rebound in the first half of 2017, thanks once again to significant growth in paid-subscription streaming. According to RIAA data, estimated retail revenues from recorded music in the U.S. grew 17% in the first half of 2017 to $4 billion. At wholesale value, the industry was up 14.6% to $2.7 billion. Total revenues from streaming music services, which accounted for 62% of the total market for H1 2017, rose 48% to $2.5 billion.
Paid subscriptions were the biggest driver of growth, jumping 61% to $1.7 billion in estimated retail value, accounting for 43% of total revenue. Paid subscriptions reached a record high 30 million averaged for the first half of the year, a growth of nearly one million new subscriptions per month as compared to the prior year.

However, revenues from sales of digital tracks and albums continued its decline to $757 million, down 24% versus H1 2016. Individual track sales revenue fell 23%, and digital album revenue dropped 26% compared with the previous year. Digital downloads, the largest format by revenue in 2015, only accounted for 19% of total industry revenues in H1 2017.

We may be seeing the bottom on physical sales, as the total value of shipments of physical products decreased just 1% to $632 million. Revenues from shipments of CDs were down 3% to $431 million, while vinyl albums were up 3% to $182 million. Vinyl albums comprised 29% of total physical shipments at retail value –- their highest share since the mid-1980s.

David Lee Murphy Signs To Reviver Entertainment Group, To Release Kenny Chesney And Buddy Cannon-Produced Album

Reviver's David Ross and Gator Michaels with Murphy and Chesney

Country artist David Lee Murphy has signed with Reviver Entertainment Group and has teamed up with Kenny Chesney and Buddy Cannon to produce his fifth studio release, "No Zip Code." Murphy has spent most of his career penning hits for Chesney, Jason Aldean, Blake Shelton, Gary Allan, Jake Owen, and more.

“I didn’t think I’d ever get out here and do this again,” Murphy explained. “You focus on writing, and that’s its own kind of great. But, Kenny and I got to talking, and it seemed like something worth doing. Then when we got in the studio, it felt so good; every day was more exciting than the one before.”
Chesney added, “David Lee is the original, and the last of, the hillbilly rock stars. His groove, the way he lays into a melody, is so smooth, yet he uses the words for shaping the rhythm. He knows the life, and he bottles it up in song. Making this record showed us what Country music can be in the 21st century.”
