WIOV's Jerry "Murph" Murphy Passes

Condolences to friends and family of country WIOV, I-105/Lancaster, PA's Jerry "Murph" Murphy who unexpectedly passed this morning.  He ws 61.  Murph was the morning co-host of the "Murph & Casey Show" on I-105 with co-host Casey Allyn.

Allyn said, "Murph was my morning sunshine.  He could make me laugh every day harder than I've ever laughed.  After spending 5 hours each weekday in a small room with someone for 19 years he was definitely my 'work spouse'.  And for all the fun and craziness he exhibited, he was one of the most intelligent and caring people I knew.  I will miss him so unbelievably much.  He and I will always be 'just like that'.”     

WIOV-FM I105 Program Director Rich Creeger said, "Murph was not only one of the most charismatic personalities I had the pleasure of working with but he was also a great friend. I will miss him tremendously."

Radio was Murph's life and he spent his whole working life and career in radio.  He found a home he loved when he went to mornings on I-105.

Rider New SVP/Promotion and Pasick New National Director of Promotion At Riser House

Former RPM President April Rider has been named SVP/Promotion of Riser House Entertainment.  At the same time Maurisa Pasick formerly with New Revolution as a regional has been named Natioinal Director of Promotion as Riser House expands.

iHeartMedia and Lenders Getting Closer to Terms of Pres-Bankruptcy Filing

iHeartMedia and its lenders are getting closer to the terms of a pre-bankruptcy filing, as expanced in a recent EX-99.4 SEC filing.

In a term sheet provided by the Company to the Lenders on February 8 iHeart propses debt consideration of:

$5.50 Billion new debt $5.50 Billion new debt at recapitalized iHeart
5-7 year maturity
Collateral in substantially all assets of recapitalized iHeart

The lenders equity consideration: 
89.5% of the equity in recapitalized iHeart
100% of iHeart's ownership in Outdoor

The proposal comes after iHeartCommunications' Board of Directors decision two weeks ago not to make a cash interest payment of $106 million, due Thursday, February 1 to holders of its 14% senior unsecured notes due 2021 as active discussions continue among its lenders, noteholders, and financial sponsors regarding a comprehensive debt restructuring.  iHeartMedia says it has cash on hand, but the Board elected not to make the payment in connection with ongoing efforts to "proactively and comprehensively address iHeart's capital structure."

Some buisness experts have said iHeart could file for bankruptcy as early as next month.

"Transcript Daily" reports, "An issue of iHeartMedia Ind (OTCMKTS:IHRT) bonds rose 2.4% against their face value during trading on Monday. The high-yield debt issue has a 10.625% coupon and will mature on March 15, 2023. The bonds in the issue are now trading at $74.63 and were trading at $75.00 last week. Price changes in a company’s bonds in credit markets sometimes anticipate parallel changes in its stock price.
"Shares of iHeartMedia Inc traded down $0.01 during trading on Monday, reaching $0.54."

Shelton Donates $50K To Hometown

Blake Shelton and Ryman Hospitality Properties donated $50,000 of ticket sales from this past weekend's concerts at Ole Red restaurant, live music venue and retail space in Tishomingo, OK to the City of Tishomingo.  The money will stay in the community to benefit Pennington Park and assist with improvements to the current splash pad and the addition of water features.  Pennington Park is open from May through September and the city hopes to have the improvements done by the 2018 season opening.

"It's always fun to play your hometown, and now that we have Ole Red in Tishomingo, we can pop up and play anytime," said Shelton. "We played a lot of music, had fun, and raised money for Pennington Park! Now, that's a good time!"

Brett Young Celebrates Third Consecutive No. 1 In 13 Months With 'Like I Loved You'

It has only been one year since Brett Young emerged on the Country music scene with the release of his debut self-titled album, but Young has been “in the fast lane to become one of Country’s breakout stars”.  One of only three acts within the genre to earn GOLD-certification for an album released last year, Young has taken "Country radio by storm” consistently skyrocketing to the top of the charts, with three consecutive No. 1 hits. January Big Month For Country Single Sales

January was a big month for Country singles sales with six artists reaching RIAA Platinum of multplatinum status during the moonth.  Kane Brown reached double Platinum with his "What Ifs," and Brett Eldredge's "Wanna Be That Song," Dustin Lynch's "Small Town Boy, LANCO "Greatest Love Story," Midland's "Drinkin' Problem" and "Yours" all went platinum.

Artists Call For Congress To Pass Classics Act

A group of 213 musical artists, along with eight leading music organizations, call upon the US Congress to pass the CLASSICS Act.  This is a  bipartisan legislation pending in both the House and Senate.   An advertisement featuring artists and signees including Garth Brooks, Dolly Parton, Trisha Yearwood, Loretta Lynn, Rodney Crowell, Roseanne Cash, Kris Kristofferson, k.d. lang, as well as the John R. Cash Trust and Hank Williams Sr. will appear in Wednesday's (2/14) issue of Politico.

The eight organizations supporting the act including The Recording Academy, A2IM, The American Federation fo Musicians, RIAA, SAG-AFTRA, Content Creators Coalition, Music First and SoundExchange.

The ad reads:

"Digital radio makes billions of dollars a year from airplay of music made before Feb. 15, 1972. Yet, because of an ambiguity in state and federal copyright laws, artists and copyright owners who created that music receive nothing for the use of their work. The CLASSICS Act (H.R. 3301 / S. 2393) would correct this inequity and finally ensure that musicians and vocalists who made those timeless songs finally get their due. We urge Congress to pass the CLASSICS Act and other pro-artist reforms quickly.”

The CLASSICS Act is one part of a package of music licensing changes supported by organizations that includes additional critical reforms such as the Music Modernization Act (H.R. 4706/S.2334), The AMPAct (H.R. 9=881) and the establishment of market-based rate standards.  In the coming weeks, music leaders believe the House Judiciary committee will begin formal consideration of the legislation with the goal of consolidating the key changes into a single bill.

ACM and CMA Award winning Country music star Sara Evans headlined the 4th annual CMT Next Women of Country tour last night, kicking off the series with a sold-out show at New York City’s B.B. King’s Blues Club! In addition to electrifying sets from Sara and special guests RaeLynn and Kalie Shorr, the packed house was treated to a special encore with the three artists performing a special rendition of the 80s anthem “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.”  
The 15-city “CMT Next Women of Country presents Sara Evans “All The Love Tour” featuring RaeLynn and Kalie Shorr” heads to Concord, NH for a special Valentine’s Day show before dates in Albany, Verona and Medford to round out the first weekend.

​The iHeartCountry Festival Returns With A Big Lineup For The Fifth Straight Year

iHeartMedia is rolling out the iHeartCountry Festival on Saturday, May 5th. For the fifth straight year, Country music's biggest stars will perform at the Frank Erwin Center in AUSTIN, TX. 
The lineup includes Luke Bryan, Keith Urban, Dustin Lynch, Cole Swindell, Maren Morris, Sugarland, Luke Combs, Billy Currington, Dan + Shay, Jon Pardi And Brett Young, with more to be announced. In addition, Bobby Bones will return as the official host.

Great work by Midwest Communications WNCY, Y 100/Green Bay, WI. They raised a total of $315,577 during its St. Jude Radiothon last week.  Over the past 21 years the station has raised just under $5 million for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Jake Owen paired with PGA Champion Jordan Spieth for the fourth consecutive year at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

"Playing in the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am is always one of my favorite weeks of the year. I was truly honored to be partnered for a fourth time with my buddy Jordan Spieth, and to have Dustin Johnson and Wayne Gretzky in our foursome was so awesome. To be able to walk alongside those guys this week was amazing, but the most incredible part for me was having my dad as my caddie. He taught me and my twin brother how to play golf when we were little kids, so walking with him on the greens at Monterey Peninsula is something that is hard to describe and I’ll never forget.” 

During last year's Pro-Am Spieth took home the trophy and Owen received the "Arnie" award, named for the great Arnold Palmer, who Jake says is probably the most respected athlete in history.

Neither Speith nor Owen took home trophies this year, but raised money for charity.

Daryle Singletary Passes

Artist Daryle Singeltary died unexpectedly today (2/12) in Nashville.  He was 46.

Singletary recorded for Giant Records in the 90s and scored three top 10 singles: "I Let Her Lie," "Too Much Fun," and "Amen Kind of Love."  He left Giant after three albums and went to Audium Entertianment.  He then released several projects independently.  No information on services is available at this time.

Knoller Group Opens In Nashville

The Knoller Group, known for artist management, marketing and brand development, has announced the opening of its Nashville office.  The Knoller Group founder and CEO Kimberly Knoller will split time between the company's Nashville and Los Angeles offices, while Brett McGinn will oversee the the LA office.

The Knoller Group's current clients include Warner Bros.' The Regrettes, Sony Nashville's Fairground Saints and Phases.

"I've been a fan of the unique and welcoming Nashville music community for years and after signing Fairground Saints to Sony Nashville, it made sense to have a regular presence in what truly is Music City,” said Knoller.

Knoller previously served as Warner Bros. Records’ Head of Direct to Consumer Marketing and e-Commerce, as well as VP, Marketing for Musictoday, which was founded by Coran Capshaw.

WXCL Raises Over $70,000 For St. Jude

WXCL, The New 104.9 The Wolf/Peoria, IL has raised $70,124 during "John and Jaymie's Radiothon" to benefit St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.  This brings the total raised over the last 29 years of fundraising to nearly $7 million.

"The Wolf Pack and people of Central Illinois realy came through for the kids and families of St. Jude by becoming Partners in HOPe and filling our "Heart of Hope," said WXCL Director/Content Chris Michaels. "It does my heart good to see the community continue to to come together to make miracles happen."

"Bobby Bones Show" To Receive Red Cross Crystal Cross Award

Trace Adkins will present Premiere Networks nationally syndicated "The Bobby Bones Show" with the Red Cross Crystal Cross Award for their support during the annual Lifesaver Breakfast hosted by the Nashville chapter of American Red Cross.  The event is scheduled for Monday, March 26 at Nashville's Omni Hotel.  The Lifesaver Breakfast hosts Nashville's most influential business and community leaders to share the mission fo the American Red Cross and reaise money to provide their core humanitarian services.

Lt. General Russel L. Honore has been appointed at this year's keynot speaker and Dr. Phil Wenk and Alan Wenk will serve as co-chairpersons of the breakfast.  Go here for further details.

Garth Named First-Ever Inductee To Live Hall of Fame

Garth Brooks has been named the first-ever inductee to the just-announced Live Hall of Fame during Pollstar Live! In Los Angeles.  The honor comes after Brooks' record-setting three-year tour, during which over 6.3 million tickets were sold, making it the biggest North American tour and largest every by a solo artist.   Brooks was serving as part of a keynote Q&A session when he was presented with the award.

"It's a total shock and quite an honor," said Brooks.  "I don't think an entertainer is anything without other people who allow him to do this." Brooks went on to thank co-manager Bob Doyle and longtime promoter Ben Farrell, among others. "They have made my career possible."

Steve Buchanan To Retire

Ryman Hospitality Properties EVP and Opry Entertainment President Steve Buchanan has announced his retirement, effective June of this year. Buchannan has been with the company for 33 years.  He began as Director of Marketing for the Ryman Auditorium in 1985 and then went to Opry Entertainment in 1998, then adding EVP duties for Ryman Hospitality in 2013.  Buchanan's time with the Ryman was impactful, as he saw the multi-million dollar renovation to the historic property, which has since become one of the most prestigious music venues in America.

Buchanan also service as Executive Producer of the show "Nashville," a fictional, sometimes-realistic depiction of the Country music industry, in addition to other television projects, including celebrations of the Grand Ole Opry's 75th and 80th celebrations. He has not announced his immediate future plans, Buchanan told the Tennessean he's looking at developing film and TV projects.  There is no word yet on plans for his successor.

Five Cumulus/Myrtle Beach Stations looking at FCC Fines For Public File Violations

The FCC has hit five Cumulus Media stations in the Myrtle Beach, SC market with fines for public file violations.  The stations were missing all but a handful of quarterly issues/programs lists and cannot account for anything before 2008 due to personnel changeover and changes in software and computer systems, although lists from 2008-10 were "recreated."  The stations, which disclosed the problem in their license renewal applications, nevertheless will see their licenses renewed.
The Commission proposed a fine of $10,000 against Country WLFF/NASH FM 106.5/Georgetown, SC and $12,000 fines each against Sports WSEA/100.3 THE TEAM/Atlantic Beach, SC; Classic Hits WSYN/SUNNY 103.1/Surfside Beach, SC; Sports WRWM-AM/FOX SPORTS RADIO 1050/Conway, SC (which simulcast with WJXY-AM-FM during most of the license term and should have had the same lists as those stations); and Urban WDAI/98.5 KISS FM/Pawleys Island, SC.

Long-time Opry Musician George McCormick Passes Away At 84

Condolences from AllAboutCountry to family, friends, and former colleagues of longtime Grand Ole Opry musician George McCormick, who passed away Monday, February 5th at the age of 84.

McCormick spent 47 years at the Opry, where he played guitar and bass and sang with artists including Grandpa Jones, Dolly Parton, Jim Reeves, and Porter Wagoner; he retired from the Opry in 1998.

Visitation is scheduled for today (2/8) from 5 pm until 8 pm (CT) and tomorrow (2/9) from 11 am until 1 pm (CT) at the Baxter Chapel Of Hooper-Huddleston & Horner Funeral Home, 203 S. Holly Street, Monterey, TN 38574.

Funeral services will follow visitation hours on Friday, and an interment will be held in Crest Lawn Cemetery, 800 W. Jackson Street, Cookeville, TN 38501.

Americana Singer/Songwriter Logan Magness Returns Home for Debut Album, MEMPHIS ON MY MIND

After living in San Francisco for several years, Americana singer/songwriter Logan Magness has moved back to his Memphis hometown and will release his debut album, MEMPHIS ON MY MIND, out March 23 on Wolf River Records, distributed through CEN/The Orchard, a division of Sony Music.

MEMPHIS ON MY MIND was recorded at Prairie Sun Studios in Cotati, California, before his move back to Memphis, utilizing many celebrated Bay Area musicians to back his vocals, acoustic guitar and harmonica work. Tracked predominantly live and rich with analog tones, the album recalls the warmth and fidelity of garage rock records of yore. “Everything was tracked in five days,” he declares. “I couldn’t afford downtime in the studio anyway. I knew I wanted things to have a live feel, so it was just dialing in the tones and trying to capture the performance. Logan Magness was raised in Memphis, TN, a town steeped in musical heritage, and home to some of the most famous recording studios in the world, but it wasn’t until moving to San Francisco after college that Magness became serious about songwriting. Nielsen Tracks The Super Bowl's Effect On Music

Nielsen Music Reported Earlier This Week That, Following His Halftime Performance At The Super Bowl, Justin Timberlake’s track downloads surged 534% for the songs that he performed. Today, Nielsen Music is reporting that on-demand audio and video streams for all of the songs performed jumped 45%, with a total unit lift of 2.7 million streams, on the day after The Super Bowl, compared to the day before.
On-demand audio streams for the songs performed followed a trend first observed in Nielsen Music’s 2017 Year-End Report, with streaming consumption picking up on Monday, following a Sunday dip. In 2017, Nielsen found that Sundays had the lowest average streaming engagement, when compared to every other day of the week.

Timberlake’s song, “Mirrors,” had the largest unit lift of any song that he performed during the halftime show, with more than 322,200 on-demand audio streams on Monday (2/5) compared to the prior day (2/4). This represented a 177% increase over Sunday. On-demand audio streams of the song topped 500,000 on Monday.

Other notable Timberlake streaming lifts include:

Filthy”: The lead single off of his new album MAN OF THE WOODS saw the second-largest increase in on-demand audio streams, with 303,000 more streams on Monday (2/5) compared to the prior day (2/4). Total on-demand audio streams reached more than 1,210,500 on Monday.

Can’t Stop The Feeling”: It topped 642,000 on-demand audio streams on Monday (2/5), an increase of nearly 150,000 streams compared to the prior day (2/4).

Cry Me A River”: The hit single off of Timberlake’s 2002 album, JUSTIFIED, saw a solid +131% / +179,300 unit increase in on-demand audio streams on Monday (2/5), compared to the prior day. Total on-demand audio streams reached more than 316,200 on Monday.

Sexyback”: The song saw a +92% / +170,500 unit increase in on-demand audio streams on Monday, compared to the prior day. 

My Love”: Total on-demand audio streams for the song came in just shy of 300,000 on Monday, with an increase of nearly 156,000 streams compared to the prior day (2/4). 
Prince’sI Would Die 4 U”: Timberlake’s cover/duet of “I Would Die 4 U” generated a +238% / +107,600 unit increase in on-demand audio streams of the song on Monday
(2/5), compared to the prior day.

ACM Announces 2018 Broadcast Award Finalists

The Academy Of Country Music (ACM) announced finalists for its annual Broadcast Awards today (2/7), honoring excellence in Country radio. Radio Awards are presented during the annual Radio Winners Reception held on Saturday, April 14th in Las Vegas, the day prior to the ACM Awards live telecast from MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Sunday, April 15th on CBS-TV. The full list of 53RD ACM Awards nominations will be announced in early March.

Don Allen Releases 'Lonely Street'

Following on from his successful 90 PROOF album,  ‘The Don’ has been back in Nashville creating some great new music with KLP Records again. The song ‘Lonely Street’ is one of Don’s old-time favorites. It was originally made a hit in 1958 by Andy Williams - now Don has breathed fresh new life back into this beautifully different country ballad.

The essential topic was how do you prepare yourself personally and technologically for the massive disruption from digital media.  It may have started with millennials, but there is not denying it has already extended to everyone, just ask your mother.
Miller recommended that you tap into why you got into this business in the first place as your source for your direction, even if it’s been in hibernation for years.  Re-awaken your skills and apply them to a multi-platform business.  Radio is storytelling and capitalize on that.
Phillips views this as a fantastic opportunity for your brand.  It transcends the radio show and goes further than radio ever could.  Advertising may appear on the decline, but that is only because we haven’t been monetizing other avenues.
McVay says it still starts with a great show and great characters that engage you and entertain you no matter what the format.  All talent needs to be savvy about the whole business to work hard to create the brand.
There is not a line of existing radio talent waiting for jobs, they have had to search outside the industry for new authentic personalities.  The old, fast talking patter is made fun of and is seen as fake.  Listeners want a genuine connection.
Radio knows change is coming and can’t be complacent.  Nielson and others need to provide better metrics to capture the new reality. Miller reports on a paradigm shift with smart speakers and voice interactivity as the future. 
The panel has a basis for their optimism if you view the future as the virtually unlimited content business and not the radio business.  Phillips sees the brightest future as technology will take us places radio never could.  McVay lived through one revolution that took radio beyond AM stations.  He feels hiring the right people will take the mental handcuffs off millennials who will take the millions who turn to radio daily to places we never thought possible.
