Samantha Benn Highlights Struggles Of Female Airplay

Samantha Bee (left) visted Nashville to meet with several female artists including Brandi Carlile, Mickey Guyton, Margo Price and Tanya Tucker and CMT's Leslie Fram to discuss their perspectives on female country artists airplay on country radio.

"Radio is still king so I feel like we are training people not to hear female voices,” Fram said.

They cited Jada E. Watson's "Gender Representation on Country Format Radio” study, which stated that in 2000, 67% of artists represented in the country format were men, while 33% were females. In the past eight years, there has been a 66% decline in music heard by female artists on country radio; in 2018, male artists performed 89% of the music heard on country radio, with only 11% of the radio format’s music coming from female artists.

Guyton gave insight on questions of race and gender in country music.

“Black people love country music and there are so many people who look like me that love country music and that’s what I’m here to do. We’re really just paving the way. We deserve to have our time here,” Guyton said.

“There is really no one person you can point a finger at,” Carlile said. “Anyone that listens to country music, anyone who loves country music, despite where you fall on the political spectrum or who it is you are, ask yourself this question, which is what do you want her daughter to know about herself? And if you can’t get that from country music, if you can’t get that from country radio, it’s a problem.”

Nettles Does Her Part For Women in Country Music

Sugarland's Jennifer Nettles tried to do her part when she walked the red carpet last November for the CMA Awards. Nettles wore a white suit with a hot pink train, with the words, "Play Our F---in Records, Please and Thank You," on her outfit. Nettles decided to wear the outfit after she heard the show would be celebrating talented women.

"There's been a ton of press pick-up, including the New York Times," Nettles said in an op-ed penned for Glamour magazine. "People kind of knew there was a disparity in country music. But I think when you look at the actual statistical information behind it, when you really understand those numbers, it’s staggering. The Annenberg Inclusion Initiative did a study and found that of the top 500 charted country songs from 2014 to 2018, only 16% were by female artists.

"That is tragic," she continued. "Those numbers reveal a truth that artists share and lament over but haven’t had the actual research to back up until now. I want to continue the conversation, on both a corporate level and a programming level, because it needs to change. It is beautiful how one spark can set aflame —hopefully — a movement. I’m calling it #EqualPlay to underscore equal pay, because it’s the same gender pay gap that’s happening across so many industries and in our culture at large."

Nettles explains that of the 16% of the songs played by female artists, the average age of the artist was 29 compared to 42 years old for men, furthering the gender-based imbalance.

"That says a lot about what we value socially — the pressures that are put on women in terms of ageism and beauty," the mother of one stated. "It also tells me that women aren’t offered the same support to be able to continue their careers. If you’re working in the music business, your life is very much dependent on travel. Touring is really the only way to make a living anymore.

"So if you’re a working mother who doesn't have the resources to support your family and take your child with you, you’re suddenly presented with a high-stakes proposition: Am I going to be gone for months at a time without seeing my child?" she continued. "If that’s a no, you’re forced to choose. This is just a microcosm of the same challenges women feel all over this country in terms of the lack of support where working moms and childcare are concerned."

Rascal Flats Announces Farewell Tour

How could it be? Rascal Flatts has announced their "Rascal Faltts Farewell: Life Is A Highway Tour" to kickoff on June 11 in Indianapolis.

"When we started out 20 years ago, we could not imagine all of the people, places and gifts we would encounter,” said Gary LeVox. "The greatest feeling ever, is being told that our music has been the soundtrack to their lives. What greater gift can an artist receive than to be told 'I got married to “Bless The Broken Road,”’ or 'We played “My Wish" at my graduation.’ That '“What Hurts The Most" is the song that made me love country music for the first time,' or '“I’m Movin' On" helped me get sober’ or even that ‘“Changed" made me call my family again after not talking to them for years.' That’s why we create music and the reason we can’t wait to celebrate this incredible 20 year journey all year, with our fans who we love dearly. I don’t know what God has in store for the future, but I am excited to see what He has planned!”

“We’re really looking forward to getting to spend this entire year loving on our fans, and thanking them for allowing us to have the most amazing career over the last 20 years,” shared Jay DeMarcus. "While it is of course bittersweet, it is so important to us to celebrate what our music has meant to their lives, as well as what the fans have meant to us. There is no sadness here, just new chapters, new journeys, and new beginnings. Rascal Flatts’ music will live on forever, because of our fans, and this year is all about them!”

“Dreams do come true...and we are three walking examples of this truth,” said Joe Don Rooney. "I’m most proud of the fact that we’ve pursued our dreams together and with courage, hard-work and dedication we’ve been able to cultivate our dreams into reality; it’s simply incredible! There’s no doubt we have been blessed way beyond belief and we can’t wait to spend the rest of 2020 expressing our love and appreciation to all of our devoted fans, music industry friends and our families for believing in us and playing a major role in our path to here. And, I personally can’t wait to shine a light on my brothers Jay and Gary this year, and make another mountain of new memories with them.”
