Ken Burns' Country Music" Reaches 34.5 Million

Ken Burns' eight-part Country Music documentary, which premiered September 15 on PBS stations reached 34.5 million unique viewers, according to Nielsen's +7 data. During the show's eight-night premiere run, the film delivered an average audience of 6.8 million cross-platform viewers (with an average household rating of 4.4), making the documentary Burns' most-watched film since 2014's "The Roosevelts."

"Country Music" was directed by Burns and produced by Burns, Dayton Duncan and Julie Dunfey. The first four episodes aired nightly from Sunday, September 15 through Wednesday, September 18 and the final four episodes aired nightly from Sunday, September 22 through Wednesday, September 25.

The series will rebroadcast on PBS on Friday nights from 9 p.m. ET from Jan. 3 through February 21, 2020.

“We couldn’t be happier with the audience we reached with Country Music,” said Burns. “We were fortunate to travel across the country to towns large and small to discuss this film and this history, and in each, we were met with new stories about the power of music. The PBS stations in just about every market helped us engage a public that rightly sees this music as their heritage.”

Beasley Broadcast Gorup Reports Record Third Quarter Net Revenue of $66.1 Million

Beasley Broadcast Group, Inc. has announced operating results for the three-month and nine-month periods ended September 30, 2019.

The $1.0 million, or 1.5%, year-over-year increase in net revenue during the three months ended September 30, 2019, reflects increased revenue in the Company’s Philadelphia, Detroit, Boston, Charlotte, Fayetteville, and Wilmington market clusters. Net revenue for the three months ended September 30, 2019 was comparable to net revenue for the same period in 2018 at the Company’s other market clusters.

Beasley reported operating income of $9.4 million in the third quarter of 2019 compared to operating income of $9.3 million in the third quarter of 2018 as higher net revenue and lower station operating expenses in the 2019 period more than offset a rise in corporate general and administrative expenses and depreciation and amortization expenses during the period. Third quarter 2019 interest expense increased by approximately $0.3 million to $4.4 million reflecting additional borrowings related to recent acquisitions.  Beasley reported net income of $3.0 million, or $0.11 per diluted share in the three months ended September 30, 2019, compared to net income of $2.6 million or $0.10 per diluted share in the three months ended September 30, 2018. The increase was primarily due to expenses related to a securities offering in 2018.

Station Operating Income (SOI, a non-GAAP financial measure) increased 12.7% year-over-year in the third quarter of 2019. The year-over-year increase is primarily attributable to higher revenue in the 2019 third quarter and lower station operating expenses related to $1.7 million of non-recurring bad debt expense that was recorded in the comparable 2018 period, partially offset by higher expenses at recently acquired stations.

Commenting on the financial results, Caroline Beasley, Chief Executive Officer, said, “Throughout the third quarter, we continued to advance our revenue diversification initiatives and actively manage our local radio broadcasting and digital platforms, while implementing our operating disciplines at recently acquired stations to drive SOI growth and margin expansion. Record third quarter net revenue of $66.1 million was driven by the strength of our station clusters in four of our top five largest revenue markets, as well as contributions from recent acquisitions and more than offset the approximate $0.9 million of combined political, spectrum and United States Traffic Network traffic revenue recorded in the 2018 third quarter, which did not recur in the 2019 third quarter. Reflecting the strong operating leverage in Beasley’s business model and the non-recurrence of the bad debt charge recorded in last year’s third quarter our 1.5% revenue growth drove a 12.7% year-over-year increase in SOI and overall margin improvement.

“We remain focused on strong local programming to support our goals of ratings and market leadership across all of our audio platforms, while making strategic investments to expand our digital capabilities to better serve our listeners and advertisers. On August 31, we completed the accretive and deleveraging acquisition of WDMK-FM, which is complementary to our three existing radio stations and digital operations in Detroit and moves us closer to our goal of achieving 30% revenue share in the market. The integration is proceeding according to plan, and we look forward to realizing the benefits of the transaction as we move into 2020. The success we are achieving through our disciplined approach to acquisitions is further reflected by the 24% year-over-year increase in pro-forma third quarter revenues at WXTU-FM, which returned to our Philadelphia cluster just one year ago. Overall, we are extremely pleased with the value we are extracting from recent transactions, which have enhanced our revenue share and competitive position in several key markets.

“Third quarter results also began to reflect financial contributions related to our new and expanding digital development and diversification initiatives. Beasley generated a year-over-year increase in digital revenue of approximately 37%, with digital now accounting for 7.4% of total revenue, compared to 5.4% of total revenue in the prior year period. Going forward, we remain committed to increasing digital share of total revenue as we continue to aggressively roll out our digital transformation strategy across the organization.  Our strategies are targeted at expanding our production of quality content, growing audiences and strengthening our digital sales support teams to deliver custom, multi-platform turnkey marketing solutions to advertisers and brands.

“In addition to our growth and diversification initiatives, we remain committed to enhancing shareholder value through capital returns and leverage reduction. In the third quarter, we used cash from operations to pay our twenty-fourth consecutive quarterly cash dividend and made voluntary debt repayments of $2.5 million, with total outstanding long-term debt of $253 million as of September 30, 2019.

“Looking ahead, Beasley has built a solid foundation to continue pursuing a range of near- and long-term growth opportunities that create new value for our listeners, advertisers, online users, eSports fans and shareholders. Beasley’s ongoing initiatives to drive sales, productivity, diversification and efficiency across our platform, combined with prudent management of our capital structure, is a proven formula for sustained long term financial growth and enhanced returns for our shareholders.”

CMA Names Kris Kristofferson 2019 Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award Recipie

The Country Music Association has revealed its 2019 Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award recipient--iconic Country Music star, Kris Kristofferson.

A special tribute is planned during "The 53rd Annual CMA Awards," featuring a not-to-be-missed performance of Kristofferson's classic "Me and Bobbie McGee" by Dierks Bentley and Sheryl Crow, Chris Janson and John Osborne. "The 53rd Annual CMA Awards" broadcasts live from Bridgestone Arena in Nashville Wednesday, November 13 8/7c on the ABC Television Network.

Kris is a living legend whose impact on our genre has been monumental,” says Sarah Trahern, CMA Chief Executive Officer. “He is the definition of an icon and someone our community holds with such high regard. I’m thrilled our Board selected Kris this year for one of CMA’s highest accolades. Though he won’t be joining us at the CMA Awards, I hope our tribute performance brings a big smile to his face.”

The Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award is for an iconic artist who has reached the highest degree of recognition in Country Music. The Award was established to recognize an artist who has achieved both national and international prominence and stature through concert performances, humanitarian efforts, philanthropy, record sales, and public representation at the highest level. The artist receiving this Award has positively impacted and contributed to the growth of the genre throughout a course of years that have proven to have an unprecedented historical impact on fans and industry alike.

Previous recipients of the Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award include Willie Nelson (2012), Kenny Rogers (2013), Johnny Cash (2015), and Dolly Parton (2016).

Kristofferson, a Country Music Hall of Fame member, is an eight-time CMA Awards nominee, receiving his most recent nod in 2012 for CMA Musical Event of the Year with “Roll Me Up and Smoke Me When I Die,” collaborating with Nelson, Snoop Dogg and Jamey Johnson. He won CMA Song of the Year in 1970 for the chart-topping “Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down,” first recorded by Country Music Hall of Fame member Ray Stevens in 1969, then fellow Hall of Fame member Johnny Cash in 1970.

Although he struggled in Music City for several years, the Texas native achieved meteoric success as a songwriter starting in the 1970s. His songs, “Me and Bobby McGee,” “Help Me Make It Through the Night” and “For the Good Times,” all chart-topping hits, helped redefine Country Music songwriting. By 1987, it was estimated that more than 450 artists had recorded his compositions.

His renown as a songwriter turned heads in Hollywood, leading to a flourishing career as a film actor. He won the 1977 Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy in “A Star Is Born” and has landed spots in more than 70 films.

Kristofferson is a three-time Grammy winner with 30 recorded albums to his credit and three decades worth of international touring. He received Country Music’s highest honor in 2004 with induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Other accolades include the prestigious Johnny Mercer Award from the Songwriter Hall of Fame, the American Veteran’s Association’s “Veteran of the Year Award,” CMT’s Johnny Cash Visionary Award, BMI’s Icon Award, the T.J. Martell Foundation’s Frances Preston Music Industry Award, and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, among others.

“Under Lisa’s leadership, her division has achieved much success. This includes the launch of the museum’s planned giving program and the creation of the Community Counts program, which provides free admission for youth ages 18 and under from Davidson and bordering Middle Tennessee counties,” said Kyle Young, CEO, Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. “Through our community outreach efforts advanced by Lisa, the museum now offers more than 1,200 educational programs each year, serving 100,000 people. This museum is a thriving and essential part the Nashville community, and this is due, in large part, to the efforts of Lisa and her team.”

Denny manages the division that meets the overall creative needs of the museum, Hatch Show Print, Historic RCA Studio B and the CMA Theater at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. Denny directs the team responsible for the artistic and material support of the museum's educational mission, development and membership initiatives; and video and and radio production. Denny, who joined the museum in 2007 and became creative director in 2009, holds a master in fine arts.

"Warren has provided the museum with a clear creative vision for the past decade,” Young said. “Under his guidance, we have found new ways to tell not only the museum’s narrative, but the genre’s as well. One way he has done this is through content creation and development and video production and editing. This strengthens our ability to share our story with diverse audiences around the world.”
