Bob Lamey Announces Retirement

Bob Lamey has announced his retirement as radio play-by-plan announcer for hte NFL's Indianapolis Colts.  Lamey called hte Colts games for 31 out of the team's 35 years in Indianapois, first from 1984 through 1991 and again from 1995 through this preseason, most recnelty on Emmis Sports WFNI-A-W298BB (107.5/1070 The Fan) and Country WLHK, 97.1 Hank FM/Indianapolis.  Studio host and sideline reporter Matt Taylor will take over play-by-play duties on an interim basis.

“I have had a great deal of fun for 35 years, and it’s time,” said Lamey, who also worked as a sports anchor at Emmis News-Talk WIBC for 23 years (15 as Sports Director) and called the NBA's Indiana Pacers in 1977-84 and the WHA's Indianapolis Racers (featuring, for eight games in 1978, a very young Wayne Gretzky) in 1974-77. “Great things and great people. I cannot thank Ccolts fans enough for their support through the years. I also owe the world to the Irsay family, particularly (owner and CEO) Jimmy. I’ve never worked for a better person or a ‘got-your-back’ boss like him. I will always bleed blue.”

Bob Lamey is a legend and icon, and his name is synonymous with Indianapolis Colts football,” said Jim Irsay “With his historic calls, familiar sayings and passion for football, he became part of the fabric of this entire community. No one has been more ‘Indianapolis’ than Even more so, he was very much a part of our team family, and he’s as dear to us as anyone who has ever worn the Horseshoe.”

The format was also down slightly year-to-year, from a 7.9 in July 2017. Queen Of Soul: Aretha Franklin From Gospel Choir To Hall Of Fame Dead At 76

Aretha Louise Franklin, who traveled from the choir of her father’s church in Detroit to become one of the titans of Gospel and the Queen Of Soul, passed away of a heart attack at the age of 76. Born March 25th, 1942, in Memphis, TN, Franklin’s father Clarence LaVaughn, who went by the nickname C.L., was a preacher from Shelby, MS, while her mother Barbara was an accomplished piano player and vocalist.

Franklin’s signing to Atlantic Records in 1967 set the stage for a series of hits that included the pre-feminist anthem, Respect,” “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman” and “Think,” among others.  Her record included a total of 112 charted singles on Billboard, including 77 HOT 100 entries, 17 Top 10 Pop singles, 100 R&B hits and 20 #1 R&B singles as the most charted female artist in history, with 18 GRAMMY Awards, and a total of 75 million sales worldwide. Aretha was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 1987 – the first female performer to enter those hallowed halls – the U.K. Music Hall Of Fame in 2005 and the GMA Gospel Music Hall Of Fame in 2012.  She finished in the Top 10 of Rolling Stone’s list of the 100 Greatest Artists Of
All Time, placing #9, and topped their survey of the 100 Greatest Singers Of All Time.

The top-selling albums, “LADY SOUL” and “ARETHA NOW,” which were both released in 1968, produced some of Franklin’s best-known songs, including “Chain Of Fools,” “Ain’t No Way,” “Think” and “I Say A Little Prayer.  She earned her first two GRAMMYS, including Best Female  R&B Vocal Performance, an award she’d go on to win eight consecutive years, and Best Rhythm And Blues Recording, both for “Respect.”  Starting in ’68, she won Best Female R&B Vocal Performance for “Chain Of Fools,” “Share Your Love With Me,” “Don’t Play That Song,” “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” “Young Gifted And Black,” “Master Of Eyes” and “Ain’t Nothing Like The Real Thing.”  She’d go on to win that same category in 1982 (“Hold On, I’m Comin’”), 1986 (“Freeway Of Love”) and 1988 (“Aretha”), earning both a GRAMMY Legend Award (1991) and a GRAMMY Lifetime Achievement Award (1994) as well as her own Kennedy Center Honors in ’94.

Leaving Atlantic to sign with Clive Davis’ Arista Records in 1980 jump-started her career, marked by a command performance at Royal Albert Hall in front of Queen Elizabeth.  Aretha’s role in the popular “Blues Brothers” movie also helped introduce her to a brand-new audience.  “Love All The Hurt Away,” released in 1981, brought her a GRAMMY for her cover of Sam & Dave”s “Hold On, I’m Comin’.” The title track to “Jump To It,” gave Aretha her first Top 40 single in a half-dozen years.

Her fifth Arista album, “WHO’S ZOOMIN’ WHO?” became her first-ever to be certified platinum in 1985, thanks to the hits, “Freeway Of Love” and “Sisters Are Doing It For Themselves,” the cover of the Eurythmics hit.  “Aretha,” its successor, produced the hit singles, “Jumpin’ Jack Flash,” “Jimmy Lee” and “I Knew You Were Waiting For Me,” her global smash duet with George MichaelIn 1998, she scored a Top 40 hit with the Lauryn Hill-produced “A Rose Is Still A Rose,” then earned worldwide acclaim for her fill-in performance of “Nessun Dorma” at the GRAMMY Awards, stepping in at the last minute for Luciano Pavarotti when throat problems forced him to cancel his appearance.

In 2011, Aretha started her own indie label, Aretha’s Records, releasing the album, “ARETHA; A WOMAN FALLING OUT OF LOVE,” then signed to RCA Records, reuniting with Clive Davis for a new album with producers Babyface and Danger Mouse.

Nielsen Summer Results 2018

During the Summer American listening habits change.  Typically stations that focus on songs of the past decades (specifically Classic Rock and Classic Hits) see their audiences grow.  The release of Nielsen's July PPM results are bringing into focus the 2018 race for "Format of the Summer," which is an annual accounting of how radio format audiences change during June, July and August compared with the first five months of the year.

Over the past six years, Top 40, Country, Classic Hits and Classic Rock have won this race, with Classic rock doing so each of the last two years and Classic Hits the two years prior to that.  But past history is not a guaranteed measure of future success when it comes to an annual summertime bump, particularly when you consider how playlists change on a regular basis among the top music radio formats.  Evidence of those shifts are clearly noticeable in the following trend, which tracks July results for the top-10 most listened-to radio formats among Millennial listeners (aged 18-34).

Top 40, Country AC and Urban Contemporary are the top formats this July among Millennial listeners, based on share of audience.  But look back just four short years and the landscape looked significantly different.

Top 40 since 2014 has seen its share among listeners 18-34 decline by nearly 20% (from 12/4% in July 2014 to 10.3% this year).

Country has rebounded in 2018 but is still down from its peak in 2013 and 2014 (2013 was the Country won the "format of the Summer" race).

AC is enjoying a multi-year run of success both on a global basis and with Millennial audiences; the format's share among listeners 18-34 has increased 28% since 2014.

Urban Contemporary has also risen steadily--particularly in the summer--going from the sixth-ranked format among Millennials in Juuly 2014 (5.6% share) to the fourth-ranked this July (6.5%).

As for Classic Rock and Classic Hits, they arrived at the same result in July (a 4.2% share among Millennials in audiences) albeit in two distinctly different ways. Classic Hits had its best July books ever in PPMs, both with Millennial listeners and among the broader audience (age 6+), where it registered a 5.7% share.  This is ahead of the historical July pace for the format and ahead of where Classic Hits was in both 2014 and 2015, when it finished as the top format of the summer.  Classic Rock, on the other hand, dropped back slightly during the month, after seeing audience growth in both May and June.  The format dipped back to pre-summer numbers across all three of the demographics we track regularly.  Among all listeners 6+, Classic Rock wen tfrom 5.2% in June to 4.8% in July; among Millennials 4.5% in June to 4.2% in July; and iwth 25-54 year olds 5.1% in June to 4.9% in July.

With only the August results still to come in, we can take a look at the four formats that have positioned themselves for the home stretch in the format of the Summer race.  The analysis for the top format each Summer is based on the percent rise in total audience (6+) share, by comparing the average of January-May with the average June, July and August.

The chart below compares the 2018 results for Country, Classic Hits, Classic Rock and Urban Contemporary. Any of these formats could end up being the summertime winner in only a few weeks' time, with a strong August showing.  Currently, Classic Hits is leading the field and looking to
regain the Summer format crown after a two-year hiatus.
